One of the most common questions that we get about the ductless mini splits is in regards to electricity that it uses. In the United States, there are some units that use 115 volt and some that use 220 volt. The main difference between these units is the source of electricity that you can use. Electricity is transmitted at 220 volt in the power line and is accessible from your electrical panel. From your electrical panel the electricity is converted to 115volt and is distributed to the power outlets in each room. Common household appliances such as your refrigerator, computer, and microwave that are plugged into the outlets typically use 115 volt.
Depending upon the location of your panel, it may be better to use either 115 volt or 220 volt. If the outside unit is further away from your panel, you may choose a 115 volt model so you don’t need to pay for running a dedicated electrical line.
In terms of energy efficiency, the rating that you should be concerned about is the SEER. The higher the SEER the more efficient the unit is. The voltage of the unit is not a direct measure of energy efficiency.
