The Cod Hole, just north of Ribbon Reef #10, is one of the Great Barrier Reef's most renowned dive sites, largely thanks to its friendly potato cod (Epinephelus tukula). Site depths range from 3-30 metres, with depths in the feeding area ranging from 6-10 metres.
Vessels require a marine park-issued fish feeding permit to feed the potato cod. Feeding limits apply, and crew members are the only ones permitted to conduct the feeding. If you visit this wonderful site, please don't touch the potato cod - doing so wipes away a protective mucous coating from the cod's skin, which can contribute to skin disease and infection.
Several Cairns-based dive operators visit the Cod Hole on multi-day trips, and Lizard Island Resort also runs day trips there.
