Part 1 of my ride around the top of the South Island. The main focus of this video is the wonderful Awatere Valley and Molesworth Track.
A large section of SH6 was closed due to road works. This meant that all traffic was detoured along SH63. When I looked at the map I saw that it wasn't much further to get to the Molesworth Track.
Google maps said the 200km journey from Blenheim to Hanmer Springs through Molesworth station would take over 11 hours. This made me think that the road must be terrible, and that fuel consumption would be quite high. I also thought I might have to camp the night in the mountains. It turns our that Google was lying. The journey took less than 5 hours - including lots of stops to look at things. The gravel road was so well maintained that the fuel consumption was comparable to a standard sealed road.
The track runs through the middle of Molesworth Station, New Zealands largest farm, and is only open to the public for part of the year. You have to stop regularly to open/close gates along the way. That just gives you more opportunity to look around and enjoy the view.
At the southern, Hanmer Springs, end of the track you can choose to go along Jacks Pass (the more accessible road), or Jollies Pass (for 4-wheel drives). Jollies was actually okay - even on a bike with road tires and a smaller 19" front wheel. It might have been sketchy in the rain.
