Tennis elbow, it is also called as lateral epicondylitis. It is a condition where there will be irritation and swelling along the outer aspect of the elbow, which is the lateral epicondyle. This is due to overuse, especially more seen in people involving in painting, plumbing and sports individual who are most used in using the wrist extension and elbow extension. These are the conditions which cause this irritation of the lateral epicondyle because there are certain set of muscles which gets originated there. There will be a micro tear which will be happening, which will be the cause of this Tennis elbow. Patient usually present with pain along the lateral aspect of the forearm, starting from the lateral end of the epicondyle. Also there is weakness of the grip strength. There will be also mild swelling that will be noted. Usually this condition will be managed 80 to 90% of the times non surgically by putting ice, local gel application, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and physical therapy. Al these symptoms fail to give you relief, then we go for a surgical option, where the extensor carpi radialis brevis is the tendon which is involved mainly in the tear. This can be done arthroscopically where we debride the tendon and do the repair and sometimes if we are not able to get the access completely, then we do a mini open repair of this extensor carpi radialis brevis. These are the treatment options for Tennis elbow.
