Ariccia is part of the “Castelli Romani” area about a half hour south of Rome. This region of the Roman countryside was the second stop on my epic voyage from Rome to Sicily that began on May 31, 2021 and lasted nearly 5 weeks.
Visiting the Castelli Romani villages was special because it was one of the few times during my trip that I had company. My friend Marco, a professional driver who lives and works in Rome, took me around to Ariccia, Nemi, Frascati, and Castel Gandolfo.
Ariccia is famous for “porchetta” — roast pork — and little casual roadside eateries called "le fraschette", so our objective there was obviously eating. And eat we did. The antipasto we ordered was both scrumptious and shocking; it was enough food to nourish a small country for a day, not to mention the pappardelle with wild boar that we were foolish enough to order besides.
The local bread, called “casereccio” (which basically means "home made"), is celebrated in these parts, as is the Romanello wine. In this video Marco explains it all.
