In this video, I test and then change my faulty EGR valve on my 1992 R129 Mercedes-Benz 300SL. This video is also helpful for those with an R107, W124 and other Mercedes and car companies from the 1980s to the 1990s.
In this video, I show how to use a simple hand held vacuum pump tester (available at many auto parts and online stores) to determine if the EGR valve is faulty, bad or not working.
A working EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve is great for pollution control and overall engine performance when operating properly but a faulty EGR valve can lead to a number of erratic issues, including rough idle, stalling, engine performance and a failed emission test, among many others. Cars with OBD capabilities will show a P0401 to P0403 codes if the EGR is really bad, but sometimes the codes won't register until the valve fails completely. And many older cars don't have the OBD capabilities. So be aware of it, and complete a simple test (as I do with the vacuum pump) as part of your regular maintenance.
