With over one million copies sold and having sold, and being praised by Buffett as "by far the best book on investing ever written," it would be a bit dumb not to have read "The Intelligent Investor" by British-born American Benjamin Graham before claiming to be an investor.
Many people find it remarkable that the book, which was first published in 1949, is still relevant more than six decades later. The book is about value investing, which Graham first taught in 1928 and later refined with David Dodd.
After reading The Intelligent Investor when he was 19, Buffett enrolled at Columbia Business School to study under Graham, and the two became lifelong friends. Buffett then worked for Graham for two years at his company, the Graham-Newman Corporation, until Graham decided to close the company and retire. The rest is history as a number of Graham's clients subsequently requested that Buffett manage their funds.
Later, Buffett created his own investment approach, which differed from Graham's in that it placed a greater emphasis on asset quality and called for holding investments for an extended period of time. Graham would rather sell an investment when it reached a predetermined value. However, according to Buffett, nobody ever lost money when they followed Graham's strategies and recommendations.
