I recently spoke to a person who was told she wouldn’t be allowed to take photographs of the wound (bedsore) her parent had developed at a nursing home--that the nursing home didn’t tell them about.
Another person told me the nursing home told them “no” to sending a loved one to the hospital when they were in distress until a doctor signed off on it.
Or being told to leave the room when a loved one is being cleaned . . . and it turned out the nursing home was hiding a nasty, infected pressure ulcer that ended up killing their mom.
It’s easy for nursing homes to exert authority because they’re the “experts” in elder care.
But you and your loved one have rights enshrined in federal regulations and -- in Ohio and a number of other states -- in state law.
Rights to proper care. Timely care. Respect. Safety. To be involved in decision making and care planning.
It’s important to stand up and ask questions. To realize you are the advocate for your loved one. And you have rights.
I link to the resident rights (federal and Ohio) in the first comment.
