The Pheasant, Gestingthorpe - www.sawdays.co.uk/the-pheasant
Toby Sawday says: “How lucky the villagers of Gestingthorpe must feel. Their local pub was saved, not by brash interlopers but by a sympathetic couple who’ve brought a sense of humour, a deep commitment to local food producers and the entrepreneurial flair to transform the Pheasant from being forlorn and forgotten into the heartbeat of the local community. Deservedly award-winning.”
Once a run-down boozer, it is now a food-led community pub with rooms. Two cosy countrified bars draw village folk in for quiz nights, wine tastings, bonfire nights, monthly supper clubs and the popular 'Thirsty Thursday Club.' Enjoy potted crab followed by lamb and smoked mushroom pie; finish with apple, pear and quince crumble. James also finds time to smoke fish, seafood and cheeses, and maintain his award-winning Chelsea show garden (beautifully recreated outside) from which the fruit and vegetables flow.
