This video show how to walk with confidence and swagger. You should always walk with good technique, vertical posture, a level pelvis, forward gaze, and a fluid arm swing. But sometimes you want to add a little something extra, just a little bit of swagger. Walking with confidence should appear relaxed. Do not lean forward and look at the ground when you walk. This often happens when people or rushed or just do not have good walking technique. If you have ever seen a kid walking with a backpack, where they are leaning forward with each step, this is what you want to avoid. You should feel like you are gliding, not pushing. You leg swing should end with the heel in the air and then the heel should be brought down in a controlled fashion. Giving eye contact and a smile to people is also an important part of walking with confidence and swagger. The term swagger does have a connotation of arrogance, and you do not want that. I will sometimes use that type of walk when I am performing in a Tango show, but for normal life, I only want to project ease and confidence, not arrogance. If you are a performer, it does help to know how to alter your walk to portray different types of attitudes. John Travolta said that he uses a different type of walk for every role. You can only do that if you are familiar with how to control your body. It is no accident that Travolta is also a great dancer. That body movement knowledge carries over into his ability to pull of different types of walk.

The more you use your core when you walk, the more you will flow. If you do not see your arms swinging fluidly, you are probably not engaging your core correctly. When I say engaging, I don't mean tightening the muscles. I mean moving your body with the rotation of the muscles in your abdominal core. The rotation of the upper abdominal muscles is what tells your body where to go and how to go there. The rotation of the lower abdominal muscles is what keeps your pelvis aligned and what controls your change of weight. Adding some action from the upper back muscles creates some added emphasis at the end of the step, resulting in what could be called a swagger. This is not a necessity in normal walking, but it does change the style. If you are trying to project a certain image, it can be helpful to know how to affect the style of your walk. That is what you will learn in this video.
