Soprano Choir Practice: "Cujus ánimam geméntem", from 2nd movement of "Stabat Mater" by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. "Stabat Mater" hymn is based upon the "Dolorosa" poem which depicts the suffering of Mary , Christ's mother, during his crucifixion. The work is divided into twelve movements, each named after the incipit of the text. Pergolesi composed the work for solo soprano and alto voices during the last few months of his tragically short life at the age of 26.
Cujus ánimam geméntem,
Contristátam et doléntem,
Pertransivit gladius.
While she waited in her anguish,
Seeing Christ in torment languish,
Bitter sorrow pierced her heart.
