Swimbait Review: 2 PC Psycho Gill
The 2 PC Psycho Gill by Lanciotti lures is a 2 PC floating resin wake and crank style lure with a soft plastic tail and large rectangular bill. The tail is affixed with 2 removable pins. The bait measures 6.25", 3.2oz, and will crank down 3-5 feet depending on setup/line choice.
The Psycho Gill is able to be waked at slow to moderate speeds, with the action becoming more pronounced as the speed is increased. The head hunts hard back and forth with a. slight nose down posture, while the soft plastic tail really aids in the fluidity and water displacement during the retrieve. There is also a slight audible click as the the halves impact one another. A V wake is produced as the bait continues along the top of the water. If you are wishing to wake it faster, I'd reccomend keeping the rod tip up... slow to medium speeds with rod tip down will allow for the best wake in my opinion.
Staying on top, the psycho will also walk very well, utilizing short rod twitches to spin the bait 180 degrees with relative ease. The nose of the bait stays down and catches water as the rear half and tail flip from side to side. The walk is fluid as opposed to choppy, and is slightly more subtle than other options. It is also not too laborious to walk the bait for the entire retrieve, as the bait does come forward as it turns... some baits walk basically in place and that is solid for cover options, but it is damn impossible to cover any sort of water. The Psycho Gill is kind of that nice in-between option.
As retrieve speed is increased with rod tip down, the bait becomes an oversized squarebill crankbait, producing a solid thump while still maintaining a nice fluid action to it. The bait will get down 3 ft easily, and even more with smaller diameter line and increased speed. The oversized bill also allows for a great deal of deflection around shallow cover. I had no issue cranking the bait from moderate speed all the way up to a burn without rolling or pulling to one direction or another. It also doesnt pull back real hard, which is a nice added bonus.
Expirament with pauses during your wake or crank- on a crank, pause it and get the bait to turn to one side by throwing some line back at it. Alternatively, you can twitch it a couple times to keep the bait at relatively the same zone, while offering an alternative look to the fish. The bait does float fairly hard in 60 degree water, so I'd reccomend keeping the pauses short and snappy.
I threw the Psycho Gill on a Nameless (previously Revelation Rods) 786, Curado 300E, and 17 lb copoly. Fluro will be a better choice for straight cranking to get it down a bit deeper, mono for waking only. Copoly is that nice in between that I often used for wake and cranks. I'm sure that braid would be just fine as well, nd may be a nice choice if you're doing alot of walking.
