Would you believe me if I told you there are four lakes in the United States deeper than the Empire State Building is tall? All of them are popular travel destinations, and one is even a National Park.

Today, we are exploring these incredible lakes, discovering just how deep they go, and uncovering the geological forces that shaped their depths.

I made a slight when talking about Mount Mazama around the 5:25 mark. I said it erupted around 77,000 years ago, but in reality it was only 7,700 years ago.

4. Lake Superior, Minnesota/Wisconsin/Michigan: Largest of the Great Lakes, over 1,300 feet deep, fourth deepest lake in the US.

3. Lake Chelan, Washington: Incredibly steep and scenic, the third deepest lake in America.

2. Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada: Astonishingly clear waters, the second deepest lake in the US, split by state lines.

1. Crater Lake, Oregon: Deepest lake in the USA, formed by a collapsed volcano, nearly 2,000 feet deep.
