A 2007 documentary about Donkey Kong video-game, "The King of Kong" is an excellent meditation on why people compete over seemingly nothing, and what that might mean for rule-making, success and achievement, and friendship.
The King of Kong features a competitive battle between world-record holder Billy Mitchell and the wannabe champion Steve Wiebe, two characters who play their parts well, inadvertently. Also featured is Walter Day of Twin Galaxies, and the major question of how rulemakers adjudicate records and disputes.
Foretelling speedrunning and professional videogame playing, The King of Kong has probably gotten better and more relevant over time. In 2020, this game asks the questions: why do we game, and why does it matter to us?
