STORYLINE:
Beijing Mayor Yin Yong reaffirmed China’s commitment to providing foreign companies “a world-class business environment” while hosting U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in the city on Sunday.
Yin celebrated Beijing as a hub for American companies like financial institutions and manufacturers, saying that “they have shared in the opportunities provided by China's rapid growth, and they have also contributed to China's rapid development.”
Yin also vowed to act on the “presidential understandings to further promote fruitful results in our cooperation,” citing the positive message conveyed by the phone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden last week.
Yellen underscored the importance of engagement with Chinese local governments.
“Local governments play a critical role, from boosting consumption to addressing overinvestment, and Beijing of course has particular importance,” she said, adding that she looked forward to discussing with Yin a way toward “the future with a healthy economic relationship that works for both of our countries.”
Later in the day, Yellen will meet students and faculty at Peking University.
