Here are examples of 12 different types of metal screams that will help you distinguish fry scream from false chord!
Fry scream is created by fast, chaotic and irregular vibrations of the vocal cords.
Fry scream is characterized by a sharp and compressed sound and a wide spectrum of registers that can be used during a scream. This technique works well for extremely high screams (e.g. "banshee scream"), mid screams, low screams and gutturals.
Many people around the world find it difficult to master the fry scream because it requires good coordination of chaotically vibrating vocal folds, airflow, breath support and compression, and it's very easy to push too hard, use too much or too little breath, energy etc.
Unlike fry scream, the false chord is based on engaging the vestibular folds, also known as the ventricular or false vocal cords. It is these which give us scream and growl in the false chord technique.
The vestibular folds are structures located above the vocal folds. They are separated by the laryngeal ventricles. Vestibular folds include vestibular muscles, whose main function is participating in the protective closure of the larynx. When the vocal folds have reduced phonatory capacity, they can assist in phonation. While the vocal cords have a mechanism that changes their stiffness, thickness, and length, mainly through the thyroarytenoid muscle, vestibular folds cannot tense because they contain very few muscle fibers. These folds can only move thanks to the arytenoid cartilages. During normal phonation, they do not vibrate.
The most basic sound in the false chord technique is the fundamental growl. For most people, it's in the lower range and may initially seem airy (it can be fixed by practicing with the compression and aiming for a fuller, more condensed soud which is easier to achieve after mastering the basic false chord growl or scream).
