(27 May 1994) Murderous civilian militias had on Friday (27/5) deserted most of
their positions in the Rwandan capital of Kigali, fleeing along
with government soldiers and thousands of refugees ahead of
advancing rebels. U.N. Spokesman Abdul Kabia said officers of the
rebel Rwandan Patriotic Front agreed to meet army commanders in
cease-fire talks on Monday in Kigali. People continued to flee the
capital on Friday in an exodus that began a day earlier. "People
are streaming in with luggage on their heads and babies on their
backs," Kabia said. Militias armed by Hutu political parties with
machetes, clubs and hand grenades have been blamed for much of the
violence across Rwanda. An estimated 200,000 people, most of them
Tutsis or Hutus opposed to the government, have been killed in the
past seven weeks. Kabia said the talks would be chaired by
Ghanaian UNAMIR deputy military commander Brigadier-General Henry
Anyieoho. UNAMIR officers were preparing a ceasefire document and
it would be given to both parties later on Friday. Kabia said two
mortar shells landed near the airport terminal on Friday and
another landed near Red Cross refugee camp. The number of refugees
at Kigali's Amahoro stadium, down to 3,000 last week, increased to
7,000 due to fresh fighting in the city centre and the suburbs.
UNAMIR field workers spoke of heavy fighting in the provincial
towns of Ruhengeri and Rulindo.
