"A lentrade del tens clar", often "modernized" in "A l'entrada del temps clar", is an ancient French ballade and is one of the most famous and beautiful musical themes that survived the time and came down to us directly from the twelfth century, the melody of this ballade was used for the contrafactum "Veris ad Imperia". The May Day Celebrations, (Calendimaggio) were among one of the most celebrated popular holidays in the European Middle Ages.
Ancient pre-Christian reminiscences linked to the cult of Nature and the harvest, which are necessary to be able to survive more than anything else.
In this minimal and rustic performance, no arrangement is taken into account that could make the melody that has come down to us more captivating. Each note is played exactly as it was written, each word sticks to the original text and you can see it yourself reading through the manuscript in the video. The idea is to evoke the suggestive, rural, festive and folk impressions present in the lyrics of this "Ballata".The text is shown below both original and translated into English, have a good listening.
☞ Regarding the presumed Occitan origin of this song:
Unfortunately, the common opinion is wrong because, as can be seen from the manuscript in the video, the original text is not Occitan but Old French. The melody is the same as "Veris ad Imperia", conductus of the "Ecole de Notre-Dame". Hendrik Van der Werf does not include this melody between the troubadour music but Karl Bartsch in the XIX century was convincted that the song was originally occitan and decide to do a translation from old french to occitan: that is the most famous translation, the one that everybody knows. In 1975 Maria Roanet includes this version in her musical program and this dance song became, in the 70s, thanks to the album by Marie Roanet, the symbol of an oppressed Occitan culture.

English:
At the beginning of the bright season, indeed
In order to be joyous again, indeed
And to annoy the jealous, indeed
The queen wants to show
That she is so amorous.
Hit the road, hit the road, you jealous!
Let us, let us
Dance among us, among us.
She has had it announced everywhere, indeed
That, as far as the sea, indeed
There shan't be maiden nor young man, indeed
Who shan't all come to dance
In the joyous dance.
Hit the road, hit the road, you jealous!
Let us, let us
Dance among us, among us.
The king comes, indeed
To disturb the dance, indeed
For he is in turmoil, indeed
That someone would want to steal
The April Queen.
Hit the road, hit the road, you jealous!
Let us, let us
Dance among us, among us.
But his toil is in vain, indeed
For she doesn't care for an old man, indeed
But for blithe young one, indeed
Who would well know how to please
The savoury lady.
Hit the road, hit the road, you jealous!
Let us, let us
Dance among us, among us.
Whoever would see her dance, indeed
And her move her pretty body, indeed
Could well say, by his troth, indeed
That she has no match in this world
The joyous queen.
Hit the road, hit the road, you jealous!
Let us, let us
Dance among us, among us.
