The Lötschberg base tunnel is an important element of the European high-speed network and connects Raron in the Valais with Frutigen in the Bernese Oberland. At 34.6 km long, it is one of the longest railway tunnels in the world to date.
Rhomberg Bahntechnik, as part of a consortium (ARGE Bahntechnik Lötschberg), was awarded the contract for the railway engineering equipment of the Lötschberg base tunnel by BLS - AlpTransit, Berne, as the total contractor. In addition, the logistics and transport sector was awarded as an independent lot to the experienced consortium Zschokke Bau AG and Rhomberg Bahntechnik as the total contractor.
The core of the project is the 34.6 km long Lötschberg base tunnel, which consists of two single-track tunnel tubes spaced about 40 m apart and connected every 333 m by transverse tunnels. The tunnel was extended in just 42 months from the start of pre-assembly in Bern to completion.
