Configure and Customize Mate with Debian 10

NOTE: I know you can adjust the panel length to small or large, but not in between or move where ever you wish.

Fixed issue when using Synaptic Package Manager for the first time in Debian:
Using terminal type: dpkg --configure -a

Be sure to update your system if needed before making any changes using Synaptic Package Manager...or

Mate Terminal:

sudo su

enter user password

apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

Relocate bottom panel to right edge of display:

Right-click on edge of panel and select “Properties”. Now under “General” tab you will notice “Orientation”. Select “Right” and adjust size to your preference. Then uncheck “Expand” and check “Autohide”. If you don’t intend to use Workspace Switcher you can remove it here by right-clicking on it. You can also customize it by right-clicking on it if you wish.

Relocate top panel to bottom edge of display:

Right-click on edge of panel and select “Properties”. Under “General” tab you will notice “Orientation”. Select “Bottom” and adjust size to your preference. Then only check “Autohide” and adjust transparency in the second tab listed as Background. Check Solid color and under Style adjust slider to transparent maybe 30.4 level.

Customize clock by right-clicking on it and use Preferences to make appropriate changes

Move Show Desktop to bottom right panel currently located in the Right panel. Right-click on clock and make sure it is Unlocked so that you are able to move it!

Replace the Menu Bar (start menu) with the Brisk Menu and add the Main Menu on the opposite end of the panel. I find these menus more intuitive for my needs...your experience may be different.

Install Plank Dock AND Mate Tweak with Synaptic Package Manager, be sure to refresh or reload before use. Also be sure you are in the ALL column (top left) when searching to install a new application.

If you are the only user it's easiest to copy and paste the extracted files in your .icons folder. The .icons folder is located in your home (user) folder. Be sure to "Show Hidden Files" in the View Menu or use your shortcut keys Ctrl+H to be able to see this folder. If for some reason it’s not there, just create the .icons folder.

Install Redshift

Install with Synaptic Package Manager, there are two files you will need: redshift and redshift-gtk. Once installed, just click on Redshift to turn it on and then right-click on it in the notification panel to enable autostart...now it will start whenever you log-in.

Customize log-in screen:

Install GTK Greeter settings with Synaptic Package Manager if you wish to customize the log-in screen. You will see it in the start (Brisk or Menu Bar) menu as (LightDM GTK+ Greeter settings) once installed.
