With global biodiversity in freefall, research to prevent the decline of New Zealand’s unique bird species on the mainland– the kiwi, kererū, kea, kōkako and others – is nationally critical. More birds in the bush is a large collaborative MBIE-funded research programme aimed at discovering the most important interventions to protect our iconic native birds in different forest types.
Now at a midway point in the programme, this webinar provides a summary and highlights of the research which is already improving the ability to forecast predator threats and bird responses, and making an impact on the effectiveness and efficiency in forest management nationwide.
Co-leaders Susan and Adrian (senior ecological researchers based in Dunedin) will touch on large-scale drivers of food resources, predators and bird outcomes of management across Aoteoroa’s forests, insights from the biggest-ever field study of ship rat dynamics through the last megamast, how aerial management affects ship rats across temperature gradients, and the implications for how we can achieve More Birds in the Bush, and share links to presentations from their recent national webinar for those who want to dig deeper.
