This is the Ridley fight, and the Mother Brain Phase 2 fight (with no speed up) from the low percent speed booster run. WARNING!!! The MB Phase 2 fight is nearly 8 minutes long, and extremely repetitive
14% SB means the game is completed with only 14 items, getting the Speed Booster (SB) instead of the Ice Beam
This is the PAL Wii Virtual Console version of Super Metroid
RIDLEY
Ridley is the first brick wall of the run. He can seem impossible at first
Ridley has 18,000 hp. Super Missiles do 600 damage (double damage). Missiles do 100 damage. Power Bombs do 200 damage but can hit twice for 400 damage each. The max damage you can do without the charge beam is 11,500. This means you have to do at least 6,500 damage with the Charge Beam only. At 60 damage per shot, the minimum number of shots is 109.
Ridley's fireballs do 15 damage. His tail does 30, and hitting his body (also if he grabs you) does 40 damage. Acid damage depends on how long you are in it. Ridley will only use the tail stab and fireballs when he is above 14,500 hp. After that he can also swoop. His first swoop is high enough to duck under, but every other swoop is too low for that. If you lay a power bomb, Ridley will stop what he is doing, and try to pick you up. If he is too far away, though, he may not.
If Ridley is tail stabbing from left to right, there is nowhere safe to stand still, however, if he is tail stabbing from right to left, you can stand on the left of the leftmost platform tile and shoot straight up without being hit. You want to try to be in this situation as much as possible. In PAL, not so much NTSC, it helps to be on the left half of the leftmost block, or Ridley will tend to bound away to the right where it's difficult to hit him.
Learning how to turn Ridley around when he is tail stabbing from left to right is an extremely useful technique. The method I use (it's not the only one), is to roll or run under his tail, then do a spin jump to the left, then turn back and shoot (it doesn't have to be a charge shot) to the right. This seems to work most of the time, and it makes a huge difference to the fight.
As well as moving more slowly, Ridley also seems to bounce higher in PAL than in NTSC, both of which make the PAL fight significantly easier imo. It also means that most of the time I can walk rather than roll under his tail, and this allows me to get some extra charge shots in when I'm turning him around.
When Ridley's hp is 0, letting him pick you up will trigger his death animation (unless he grabbed you during a tail stab)
The charge spin attack can protect against fireballs. Also, you don't need to hold down the shoot button when wall jumping with the beam charged
In this fight I fired 116 charge shots instead of the minimum 109. This is 420 points of extra damage, which tells me that my Power Bomb placement was not ideal, and 2 of my Power Bombs must not have registered double hits
MOTHER BRAIN
Mother Brain is the second brick wall of a low percent run. This fight can seem impossible at first. In my opinion, it is much harder than Ridley.
Mother Brain Phase 1 can only be hit by rockets. It takes 6 rockets to open the glass case. The brain has 3,000hp, but it seems that some of your shots will be counted as hits against the case, even if you only hit the brain.
Mother Brain Phase 2 is by far the hardest part of the run imo. She has 18,000 hp. It takes 300 shots of the charge beam to kill her. You must also finish this phase with at least 301 energy, or you won't survive the Laser Brain Attack. Grenades do 40; grenade fireballs do 20 (unless you land from above in the centre of the explosion, in which case you take no damage); blue rings do 20 each (but you have no damage invulnerability from them so you can take multiple hits from one volley); the eye beam does 30; touching Mother Brain does 60; the red hand beam does 100; and the laser brain attack does 300
My strategy is to stand in the corner shooting and jumping. It may look easy, but I always find getting 300 hits without dropping below 301 energy is extremely difficult, as any little mistake or piece of bad luck can be fatal
Mother Brain starts using her red hand beam when she gets to 4,500 hp. If you are using the Charge Beam only, she will start using it after 225 shots. Since getting hit by it is instant failure, it's a good idea to count shots during the fight.
