This is a short taken from one of my Intro to Philosophy class sessions at Marist College in 2012, which was focused on the themes of Love, Desire, and Friendship. We were in the first day of three devoted to a classic text on the topic, Plato's Symposium. This short looks briefly at the distinction that the legal expert Pausanius makes in his speech, the second of the party, between the soul (or if you like the personality) and the body.
The body can be made attractive and desirable through beautifying it in various ways such as makeup and exercise, but making a person's soul beautiful requires a lot more work.
