Jim and I decided to check out the soil restoration project happening in our newly "fully funded" geothermal greenhouse project in downtown Pagosa Springs. Won't you join us?

Mission Statement:
The Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership is a 501c3 nonprofit located in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Our mission is to educate the community in sustainable agricultural practices by producing food year-round using local renewable energy.

Our goal is to build three greenhouses for our community. The first will be the Education dome. Its purpose is for education of K-12, adults, tourists, and community members to learn first hand what sustainable agricultural practices are, how to grow their food, and by using the area’s natural resource, the world’s deepest geothermal hot springs, what sustainability can mean. The second will be the Community Gardens dome. Its purpose is to give community organizations the ability to grow food, educate their members, create sustainability for the life of their organization, and serve the community. The third dome will be dedicated to innovation and best practices for the future.
Greenhouses:
In an effort to help the economic growth of our own community, two of the three 42-foot greenhouses will be geodesic domes fabricated by a local company, Growing Spaces. The domes are made of triple wall polycarbonate triangles with black-lined heating pools and solar-controlled fans to regulate temperature. Construction will include foundations and heat exchanger/cooling systems with the requisite underground utilities.
Additional outside garden production areas, walkways, refrigeration units, public amenities, utilities, and an amphitheatre complete the physical project.

Education Greenhouse:
The first of the three greenhouses, the Education dome, was constructed in the Fall of 2016. The beds have been seeded and the plants are flourishing. Workdays are held every Tuesday and Saturday, from 10am-2pm, where volunteers can be viewed in action. When programming is developed, the dome will be devoted to teaching sustainable gardening skills and environmental education – pre-K through secondary students, Colorado State University Extension Services, and university level students, as well as visitors, eco-tourists and community members. A few of the beds will be devoted to the GGP’s desire to prove sustainability; plants will be sold to produce revenue for the project.

Community Gardens Greenhouse:
The Community Gardens greenhouse, the second dome, received a matching grant of $34K from the Colorado Garden Foundation to be awarded in March, 2018. This greenhouse will be devoted to community organizations interested in renting garden beds; the produce grown will belong to the organizations. Suggested uses are community support of individuals in need, benefit to the the organization’s members, and Farmer’s Market sales. The GGP will provide the educational component to ensure the organizations’ success.

Innovative Greenhouse:
The third greenhouse will be devoted to innovation. As the first two greenhouses become sustainable, the third will be developed to provide the latest in scientific advancement.
Phase III
domePhase III will be about expanding the influence of the Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership. This phase will involve the GGP in a business incubation effort – sharing the knowledge it has gained about crops, production methods, and geothermal technology with entities interested in establishing production greenhouses. As a result our community should experience the creation of more tourism, new jobs, and become more economically heterogeneous, thus less vulnerable to economic downturns.

Future Activities:
Continue to pursue specific funding opportunities for the construction of the GGP facilities.
Continue to build relationships locally, regionally, and nationwide to encourage financial and promotional support.
Continue to build relationships with vested entities that can support and participate in the development of the project.
Build and manage the project efficiently and cooperatively.
