This conversation features conductor James Conlon, Artistic Director of The Colburn School’s Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices; Adam Millstein, curator and producer for this virtual concert by Colburn musicians; and Anne McLean and David Plylar from the Library’s Music Division. The concert presents young Colburn School artists performing music by four composers suppressed during the Nazi regime in Europe: Franz Schreker, Herbert Zipper, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Mieczysław Weinberg. Viewers will hear commentary about each work and about the composers’ lives. Zipper’s Two Dances for Trudl, an unpublished composition drawn from the Colburn archives, is a world premiere, offered with choreography from the school’s Trudl Zipper Dance Institute. James Conlon talks about his long advocacy for a generation of composers whose works are still being recovered and reclaimed through performance and recording initiatives. He describes the historic and cultural contexts for figures like Franz Schreker, a significant composer and educator in Vienna and a peer to composers like Richard Strauss, whose music was almost eradicated by the mid-1930’s. The goal for his work with The Colburn School and at the LA Opera is to rediscover these composers, resurrect their forbidden music and restore them to a place in the history of 20th-century music.
