En primer lugar, el logotipo es aquel símbolo de una marca, empresa o institución compuesto únicamente de texto y letras, como es el caso de Google, Vogue o Canon. En segundo lugar, el isotipo es una parte simbólica de una marca, comúnmente reconocida sin necesidad de una parte textual, como son los símbolos de Twitter, Playstation y McDonalds. El imagotipo, por su parte, es la combinación de una imagen y un texto, aunque también pueden funcionar por separado, como ocurre con Adidas, Lacoste y Nike. Finalmente, el isologo es un texto e icono que conforman una única figura y que separados no poseen un sentido razonable, como en los logos de Starbucks, Burger King o Lays.
