1. Medicare is confusing! There are 4 Parts to Medicare. For some parts you can only enroll through the Social Security Administration, other parts through Private Insurance companies. All 4 Parts also have different costs and options associated with them, as well as different enrollment periods. You’re also probably getting tons of calls and mail about different Medicare plan options, which makes everything even more confusing! A good Medicare Broker is an unbiased source that can help you navigate through all of that information, help you figure out which path is right for you, and help with enrollment into all 4 Parts of Medicare.
2. It is free to work with a Medicare Broker (or at least most Brokers, like myself). So how do Brokers get paid? We are paid a commission by the Insurance companies, which is a standardized commission set by CMS. So no matter which Plan you end up choosing for Medicare Part C and D (which is an Advantage Plan, Drug Plan, or Supplement Plan), a Broker gets a standardized commission for that enrollment from the insurance company. So therefore a Broker’s services are free to you. So cost-wise it’s exactly the same whether you enroll In a Medicare Plan directly through an insurance company OR through a Medicare Broker. The only difference is, a Medicare Broker provides much more value than just helping you enroll into a Plan.
3. What is that value? A Medicare Broker will help you compare and contrast different Medicare plan options from different insurance companies, taking into account your health and financial situation. A Broker will also take into account your Doctors and your prescription medications, to make sure you are covered well. A good Broker will also help you with enrollment into all 4 Parts of Medicare, as well as continue helping you with your Medicare Plan after your enrollment. So if questions come up about how to use certain benefits on the plan, Doctors network questions, changing your plan if you’re not happy with it in the future. A Broker can be like your personal Medicare Assistant for years to come, and at no cost to you.
4. Finally, a Medicare Broker’s fiduciary relationship is to you. Because we do not work for any one company, an Independent Broker is an unbiased source of information, and will look out for your best interest, in presenting you with options for Medicare Part C and D Plans, which again are Medicare Advantage Plans, Prescriptions Drug Plans, as well as Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap Plans).
