¹ The traditional meaning of caravan, or camel train - a group of camels tied together by rope, carrying people and baggage, and led by the guide on his own camel. A common motif of Arabic poetry is that these camel guides would sing songs to spur the camels on during long journeys through the desert.
² The closest of the Prophet Muhammad's followers (sahaabah - literally "companions") and later his successor, becoming Islam's first Caliph. Buried alongside the Prophet Muhammad in his shrine in Madinah, modern-day Saudi Arabia.
³ Haram = sanctuary, of which there are considered to be three in Islam. When used on its own like here, it generally refers to the most famous and holy of the harams - Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, modern-day Saudi Arabia.
The Qasidah al-Burda (Ode of the Cloak) is a 166-verse qasidah (ode) in praise of the Prophet Muhammad by Muhammad al-Busiri, the 11th-century disciple of the Shadhili tariqah (Sufi order), in which he praises the Prophet Muhammad and his followers. Al-Busiri relates how, after becoming paralysed in his old age, the Prophet Muhammad appeared to him in a dream and wrapped his cloak around him, after which he awoke to find that he was cured of his paralysis. These events inspired him to compose what would become the most famous and oft-recited poem in Islamic history.
The Burda is recited by Muslims in many different countries and in many different compositions, but rarely in its entirety. It used to adorn Masjid al-Nabawi (the Prophet Muhammad's mosque and current resting place) before it was erased by the Saudis in the 20th century except for one verse.
