The U.N. special envoy for Myanmar said Wednesday the generals who seized power in the Southeast Asian nation indicated they don’t fear renewed sanctions, but are “very surprised” by the opposition the coup is facing.
The coup reversed years of slow progress toward democracy in Myanmar, which for five decaes had languished under strict military rule.
The military crackdown on protests has been brutal, with at least 38 people reported to have been killed by soldiers on Wednesday. Eric Sorensen reports.
