푸틴-에르도안 정상회담, 양국 관계 전면적 복원 합의
The leaders of Turkey and Russia say they've opened a new chapter in their bilateral relationship,... which was smashed when Turkey shot down a Russian warplane late last year.
The trip to Russia was President Erdogan's first foreign visit since a failed coup last month.
Park Jong-hong reports.
Emerging from a summit with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Saint Petersburg, Vladimir Putin vowed to restore cooperation with Turkey.
"Our priority is reaching a pre-crisis level of bilateral cooperation and it's a really pressing task. Within the space of five months this year,... our trade volume tumbled by 43 percent."
The reduced two-way trade was the result of Russia's sanctions on Turkey following its shooting down of a Russian warplane in November last year.
Figures show the number of Russian tourists visiting Turkey plunged by nearly 90 percent in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year.
In a joint press conference, the two leaders said they discussed the resumption of commercial flights and the importance of the so-called "TurkStream" pipeline project to deliver natural gas from Russia to Turkey.
Putin said he was sure the project could begin in the very near future.
Experts say the high-profile patch up comes at a time when Russia and Turkey both face strained relations with the West.
Turkey has been criticized for its purge following the failed coup and Russia has seen relations fall to new lows over its intervention in the Syrian civil war.
