When it comes to sports cars and luxury cars, we tend to think about style over safety, but even vehicles like the Mercedes SLS and Tesla model X aren’t safe from crash tests. Manufacturers have crashed, crushed, and rolled some of their very best cars to make sure all the work they put into their safety features was worth it. But from Maserati to BMW to Porsche, it hurts to see these cars being repeatedly smashed.

It can take three months to prepare a car for a series of Euro NCAP crash tests, and each vehicle undergoes an average of six. It’s not just the car that’s expensive-- crash test dummies can cost as much as $125,000 dollars each, and they're decked out with technology making them perfect for recording crash test data. Multi-million dollar simulation software can also be used to limit the amount of physical tests and some companies even repair their destroyed models between tests to save money.
