When finishing a pocket with straight or slightly tapered walls, an indexable Back Draft or Bull Nose cutter is a perfect choice. A solid carbide end mill may work just fine for a shallow, straight-walled pocket. But the deeper you go, the more susceptible it is to deflection that will cause taper in your walls. A Back Draft tool such as our EDGE² SBD minimizes tool pressure and deflection by engaging just a small part of the insert to make the cut.

Here we finish a 3-1/2" pocket wall with a racetrack profiling routine. You could also plunge finish and creep around the pocket. The Back Draft cutter will give you a straight wall every time, as well as a very nice surface finish.

Using the same tool to finish the pocket floor at a slower feed rate will give you a nice finish and generally provides a nice-looking blend or transition at that point where the wall and floor intersect.
