Showing the affect of filtering the mains supply to a radio, and specifically, how the mains earth carries a lot of interference. Adding a simple choke can make a huge difference to conducted noise.
For those asking, the ferrite rod I am using in this video is a simple ferrite rod antenna. However, significant further improvement is to be found using 31-mix ferrites. Fair-Rite 31-mix clamp on core (part number 0431177081) is my recommendation. Mouser and Digikey have these at the cheapest price; RS price is middling, and Farnell are most expensive.
Filtering the mains is perfectly acceptable and safe. However, this demonstration presented here is dangerous, as the unplugged socket is live. Do not try this at home without understanding the risks.
