The natural history of atherosclerosis development is difficult to study. Plaque erosion and plaque rupture are the most established pathology observations leading to plaque thrombosis and subsequent myocardial infarction or stroke. This paper debates the current view on the development of stable and unstable plaques and point to an emerging role of bulk and single cell sequencing of atherosclerotic plaques.
