President and CEO Kwang-Wu Kim is recommending that the college reduce its core gen-ed requirements to 30 credits beginning in Fall 2024.
This would result in the possible elimination of 11 to 13 full-time faculty positions across the English and Creative Writing, Humanities, History and Social Sciences and the Science and Mathematics departments.
In his draft of the Presidential Advisory Report, shared in an email with the campus community on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Kim also proposed many ways to address Columbia’s deficit including:
- The sale of real estate such as the president's house and the library building located at 624 S. Michigan.
- 28 majors selected as “programs of concern” that could be eliminated, revised or combined with other programs.
- The reduction of Columbia Core credit requirements from 42 to 30.
- Increased course load for tenure and tenure-track faculty. And addressing the decline in student enrollment.
The faculty senate will now review and provide feedback on the recommendations by April 10. Followed by Kim presenting final recommendations to the board on May 2.
