The Dance sequence from the 2nd TRACE-E show, featuring Stacey Barnett in her own choreography to the two tracks. Filming is a bit 'rough-and-ready' but it gives a great idea of one of the highlights from these performances.
Dance 1 uses a distinctive felt piano sound, blending in strings towards the end. As the sounds decay, it segues into Dance 2, involving Stacey triggering the sounds and pulse at the very start using a Genki 'Wave' Ring (if you look closely, you can see this on the first finger of her right hand).
The Ring also controls a looping cascade of sound once the dance is properly underway, and she continues controlling that sound right until the closing bars. In other words, she's not only dancing, but shaping the sound she's dancing to.
Samples for Dance 2, like most tracks in the TRACE-E Project, include smartphone alarm sounds. This has been put through various granular sampling engines to create the distinctive rhythmical riff you hear in this track, along with string lines, sub-bass and additional percussion.
To complete the picture, Stacey planned her dance whilst wearing a specially-made jacket, embedded with 1,000's of LEDs, all wired to respond to every movement (just like the 'Wave' Ring) in a cascade of light across the stage. Unfortunately, like all live performances, this aspect was victim of last-minute glitches and Stacey had to dance without it.
