How to do the FABER test is an extremely useful video to learn how to do this clinically significant test. The FABER test, also called the Patrick’s test is used to assess the hip joint range and pain provocation. It is also a very useful test for assessing pain provocation in the sacroiliac joint, lower back and psoas muscle. Often a patient will report pain in the hip joint but still have a fairly normal gait pattern. This can sometime lead the practitioner to believe that the hip joint isn’t as bad as it actually is. I use the FABER test to assess just how bad the hip joint is in terms of range and pain. A patient can often walk but when lying supine on the couch have very limited and painful range in the hip joint eliciting a positive test result. When the FABER is positive and the patient really experiences sever pain on flexion (F), abduction (AB) and external rotation (ER), hence FABER – it is time to refer the patient on for further investigations including blood analysis, scanning and orthopaedic opinion.
