Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released just as the pandemic set in and kept most Americans in their homes with little in the way of in-person social interaction. Through user-created avatars, Animal Crossing allows players to have intimate experiences with others virtually, in a way that recreates and enhances in-person interactions. Despite the pandemic, or perhaps because of it, these interactions have allowed players to stay connected in a way that very few virtual spaces have done well. This talk will examine how the bonds formed through a virtual avatar feel just as real as those made in real life, and how Animal Crossing's tightly-designed life simulator encouraged positive social interactions.
