Croatia’s second largest city is situated on the Dalmatian coastline. Although it boasts an urban area, Split is primarily known for its wealth of stunning architecture and antiquities. The abundance of Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic-style palaces, medieval forts and 12th century Romanesque churches instantly transports you back in time.
As you stroll hand in hand through the historic heart of Split’s charming Old Town you’ll eventually reach its most iconic landmark. Diocletian’s Palace is one of the best-preserved Roman remains in the world, and is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through the elegant courtyards and maze-like alleyways, admiring the impressive architecture and retracting the steps of Croatia’s historic nobility. Enter the open-air central area of the palatial grounds to discover the Cathedral of St Domnius.
Locally known as Sveti Dujam, St Domnius is the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world, and flaunts an octagonal structure. It was originally built as a mausoleum for the Emperor Diocletian. Admire the colonnade of 24 columns that encircle the cathedral’s exterior, before climbing to the top of the ancient Romanesque bell tower for breathtaking panoramic views across the Old Town’s rooftops, and Marjan hill, and a special romantic moment.
