The 16th-century walls of Lucca, Italy, make up one the best-preserved examples of modern fortification. Encircling the entirety of the old city, the walls are 2.5 miles (4km) long and were designed specifically to resist cannon fire. Today they are enjoyed by the Lucchesi and tourists alike as an urban park where you can walk, jog or bicycle under the shade of oak and chestnut trees.
