In this video, you will learn standard Twitter API and its limitations, to get the keys required to access the Twitter API, different ways to authenticate your request.
Twitter provides data for research or analytical purposes through the Twitter API. The Standard API is the free version of Twitter API which can be used to access the tweets data.
It has limitations such as you can only fetch tweets from past seven days, the number of tweets per request are limited and the number of requests are limited which resets after 15 minutes. These limitations help Twitter to keep the usage under control and avoid congestion.
If you want to fetch tweets older than 7 days then you can opt for the paid versions of Twitter API. To get the data from twitter, your request must be authenticated by a set of keys. This keys help twitter to identify you. To get the keys you can follow the steps shown on the screen. These steps are covered in detail in the upcoming PDF unit. In these steps, while creating the application you need to explain how you are going to use the Twitter data.
After that, Twitter will process your application and provide you with two sets of keys namely consumer API keys and access tokens. This can be found in the App Details page under ‘Keys and tokens’.
The Consumer API keys provide app-only authentication for your request. With this authentication, you can search in tweets, access friends and pull user timeline. But you cannot do post tweets, access direct messages and access user-specific information such as their email address.
To do this you will need user authentication which can be done using both consumer api keys and access tokens. These keys must be secured properly as you would secure your username and password.
If the security of these keys is compromised, then it might expose access to your twitter account functionality and private information.
The Tweepy Python library can be used to access the data from the Twitter API.
