Week 7 of the Greatest Jazz Birthday Party Ever: With 60+ musicians from all over the world and 15 different bands, I guess it would have been overly optimistic to expect all 8 weeks to roll without some challenges to overcome … and in week 7 we had a true test. Thanks to immigration regulations, Avishai Cohen was unexpectedly not able to arrive in the U.S. in time for the RTF Acoustic week. Many thanks to Victor Wooten for stepping in the bass chair at the last minute! Chick and RTF drummer Lenny White, along with legendary flutist Hubert Laws, Ravi Coltrane on tenor/soprano sax and Victor or both upright and electric bass — kicked out the RTF jams from the band's first two classic albums (Return to Forever and Light as a Feather), as well as other gems from the '60s ("Windows," "Tones for Jones Bones," "Litha," "Matrix" and more). A touching moment was Gayle Moran Corea, wife of the birthday boy and amazing singer/pianist, reciting a beautiful new poem she composed for Chick and then surprising him with a rendition of "The Impossible Dream," with Gayle accompanying The Phantom of the Opera star James Barbour’s amazing vocal performance. Sold out shows and elated audiences seemed to validate, that even after 7 weeks at the Blue Note with Chick — the crowd yells out for more! Coming soon: your video recap of the amazing final week, with RTF Meets Mahavishnu!
