--------------------------
Many consider "Ballad for a Woman" by Tirza Atar to be her last poem, due to the lines, "Even the books in the closed and sad room / Already knew she's not alright / She's leaving forever"…"But despite it all, it's all over."
Tirza Atar translated many theatrical works, and her last poem was written for the play Dead Fish ("Four Women" in the Hebrew translation) by Pam Gems. On October 7, 1977, the day the song was recorded, Tirza Atar fell to her death from the window of her sixth-floor apartment in Tel Aviv.
"Ballad for a Woman" reminds one of "Poppies in October" by American poet Sylvia Plath (translated into Hebrew by Tirza Atar), who wrote in the 1960's about her attempted suicide. "Even the elevated clouds could not…" in Atar's poem resembles Plath's "Even the sun-clouds this morning cannot…"
Perhaps this poem, more than anything else, symbolizes the duality in Atar's life: despite the death that hovers over it, there is also beauty and life – from Wilensky's melody to the line "The wild lilies still bloom in the distant valley".
Even though Tirza Atar has not been with us for 45 years, her subtle and humane oeuvre is still loved and is fresh to this day, like the wild lilies that continue to bloom forever.
--------------------------
Even the elevated clouds, could not bear her silence,
She glanced dissatisfied, she glanced and knew
That the wild lilies are now blooming in the valley,
And despite it all, it's all over.
Even the October clouds, purple in the sunset,
Did not help her for a moment,
did not help her to calm down,
Even though the wild lilies bloomed again in the valley,
Despite it all, it's all over.
Even the books in the closed and sad room,
Already knew she's not alright, she's leaving forever
The wild lilies still bloom in the distant valley
But despite it all, it's all over.
