Many people believe that Lucille Ball first saw Desi Arnaz in 1940 on the set of the film “Too Many Girls” at the RKO studio. However, that was not the first time Lucy saw Desi. It was earlier that year, when Lucy first got to watch Desi perform in the big Broadway hit, Too Many Girls, that later inspired the Hollywood movie. While Lucy was visiting New York City, someone suggested she should go see the show. She had just found out, that RKO had bought the movie rights and George Abbott was going to direct. Although still unconfirmed, Lucy was going to get a role in the movie. As Lucy writes in her autobiography, the sensation of the show was the twenty year old Cuban named Desi Arnaz. He was the Elvis Presley of his day. Not only thrilling but also funny, a rare combination she notes. Lucy immediately fell in love with his talent and even tried to see him perform at a night club, one evening during her New York trip, but Des it was his night-off.
