TEXT:
The Social Security Administration (SSA) hearing offices in Northeast Ohio currently have almost 16,000 pending cases, and an average processing time of 555 days, which is over a year and a half of waiting time. Within the United States, there are 1.1 million Americans waiting for their Social Security disability case to be heard.
Despite the growing number of Social Security disability cases and increasing wait time, the SSA is seeing a decrease in employment numbers. In June 2015, there were 65,666 employees. Two years later in June 2017, the number of SSA employees dropped by almost seven percent to 61,592.
However, for many the wait is worth it in order to receive the monthly Social Security payments, especially for those who depend on it to make it through each month. In 2016, the average Social Security Disability Insurance payment was $1,293.
The time between applying for benefits and receiving them can be frustrating, but our office is here to fight for you every step of the way. Liner Legal attorneys Michael Liner and Andrew November are advocates for decreased backlog through the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, Social Security & Disability Section.
