Gympie Gympie is one of the most venomous plants in the world .
It was first documented in 1866 by A.C. Macmillan
It has broad oval- or heart-shaped leaves coated with needle-like hairs, and Is primarily present in rainforests within the north-eastern areas of Queensland.
The Australian stinging tree species are notably infamous for producing [an] excruciatingly painful sting .
Toxins produced by Australia’s stinging timber bear a robust resemblance to those of spiders and scorpions .
The plant is roofed in hole needle-like hairs referred to as trichomes, that are strengthened with silica .
With the exception of its roots, every single part of the deadly tree – its heart shaped leaves, its stem and its pink/purple fruit – is covered with tiny stinging hairs shaped like hypodermic needles.
You touching it will break off the little silica hairs (or trichomes) on its leaves, allowing it to inject its venom into your skin .
An off-the-cuff split-second contact on an arm by a leaf or stem is sufficient to induce extreme pain for hours or days. In some instances the ache has been reported to final for weeks.
Some victims compare the stinging sensation to being simultaneously electrocuted and being doused in acid .
The sting does not stop several small marsupial species, including the red-legged pademelon, insects, including the Prasyptera mastersi, and birds, from eating the leaves.
