Hygrometers are not perfectly accurate all the time, especially the analog devices, which is why it’s important to calibrate your hygrometer every six months to ensure the optimum humidity level for your cigars.

Remember, the magic number for cigars is 70% relative humidity.

To properly calibrate your hygrometer, it is best to preform a “Salt Test”

When the proper ratio of salt is mixed with water, the combination omits exactly 75% humidity. If the “salt test” is executed properly, your hygrometer will read 75% when finished…if not, you’ll need to make adjustments.

To preform the “Salt Test” you will need the following items: Table Salt, Distilled Water, A Bottle Cap, and a Ziploc Bag.

Step One: Create a salt and water mixture. Fill the bottle cap ¾ of the way full with salt and then take a few drops of distilled water and pour it onto the salt. You only need a few drops as you are looking for a damp, cake like consistency. Using too much water will dissolve the salt.

Step Two: Seal your hygrometer and salt mixture in a Ziploc bag, leaving a little bit of air inside, and let it sit for 12 hours. It’s important to note that you can calibrate multiple hygrometers at the same time.

Step Three: After 12 hours have passed; record the reading of your hygrometer while it is still sealed in the bag. If your hygrometer is not reading 75% at this time, you will need to adjust it.

Step Four: Adjust your hygrometer. For analog devices, insert a small screw driver into the slot in the back of the hygrometer and turn the slot until it reads 75%. For digital devices, simply turn the adjustment knob on the front of the hygrometer to the left to decrease the number value, or to the right to in crease the number value. Not ALL hygrometers adjust the same however so be sure to consult your manual.

Quick Tip: If your hygrometer does not have an adjustment knob and a discrepancy does occur after the salt test: for example your hygrometer is reading 68% instead of 75%. Simply take note of the variance so you know that your hygrometer is -7 and should read 63% when placed back in your humidor.

Lastly, if this seems like to much work, there are more accurate units available in which the unit never has to be tested or adjusted. Just set it and forget it.
