Can video games damage my eyes?

Patients to our eye clinic coming in for an eye examination, contact lens prescription or eyeglass prescription often ask me this question. As I tell them, and as I provide my professional optometrist opinion here...

It's highly unlikely that someone at Sony or Microsoft will encourage you to use a product that will damage your eye.

I guess the answer to this myth is NO, although this is probably not the answer that most parents want to hear, no scientific study has ever shown that no video game has ever created permanent eye problems or eyeglass needs.

So, feel free to stay glued to your couch, in your fantasy land, destroying mythical creatures with mystical spells and rocket launchers.
