One of History's most famous prisons of castles is the Tower of London. It sits on the banks of the River Thames as a constant reminder of the monarchy's power, and it is a place today which is remembered for torture, execution and horrific punishment. Within the walls of the Tower, 3 Queens of England, (Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey) were executed being beheaded, however torture was also used inside the walls too.

Torture devices such as the infamous rack, the device that aimed to rip limbs from sockets was used over the years to obtain confessions. There are accounts of prisoners being so terrified that the sheer sight of the rack was enough for them to hand over information. Guy Fawkes and Anne Askew found themselves on the rack having a horrific ordeal. Other torture devices such as the manacles and the Scavenger's Daughter were used to inflict pain onto prisoners inside of the Tower of London.

Despite it being know for horrific torture and executions, more punishment actually occurred outside the walls of the Tower, a short walk away at Tower Hill. This was where many of the prisoners held there were actually executed at the scaffold at the public beheading site during the Tudor period.
