Pivot time! Normally you would be watching a Steam Deck emulation tutorial this morning...but we have bigger fish to fry. Because we are going to be talking about video game emulation, its legal status and how creators can TEACH YOU how to set up a Steam Deck (or any other device) to play the games you own....in any manner you see fit! It's a bit of a offshoot video but its hugely important!

I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Steam Deck.

Except today it is totally different because last Saturday I ran into a bit of an issue on my Steam Deck tutorial...namely its removal! Thankfully I have a long background in copyright and intellectual property law, have taught it to college students and have used this knowledge in many aspects of my working life as a filmmaker and professional athlete manager.

So today we will be talking about the concept of why video game emulation is legal in the first place, the concepts of Fair Use under United States law and how to protect yourself when you are teaching video game emulation tutorials. Because one day you may need to appeal your own issue...and I want you to have the knowledge, language and case precedent to do so.

Basically, if you follow the rules I have laid out in this video...you are 100% free and clear to teach people emulation. JUST FOLLOW THE RULES! Because whether its MAME, Steam Deck, MiSTer FPGA...or Xbox Series X...emulators exist and you are well within your rights to use them to enjoy video game history...under certain criteria!
